Designing First, Optimizing Later

This is definitely not a good idea, although it happens all the time.  Problem is, designers make it look pretty, and SEO nerds make it visible.  Neither wants to do the other’s job, so they just don’t.  It’s your responsibility as a buyer, to make sure you’re clear about what you need, and make sure that both pillars are covered somewhere through the mix, and hopefully, under budget.  I have seen this mistake repeated hundreds of times. Even experienced web designers fail to consider the results of design decisions on search optimization until it’s too late. What is the point of spending thousands of dollars for a well “designed” web site if nobody ever sees it? Consult a search engine specialist early in the design process. Even if your web site marketing strategy relies heavily on paid search advertising a consultation with a professional optimization expert may expose flaws in your site’s layout. Too Much PPC?

This is a mistake made by everyone from Fortune 500 companies to mom and pop shops.  The other day I spoke with a company completely dependent on the leads they received from PPC.  Problem was, they were spending almost five thousand dollars a month to obtain them.  They couldn’t cut down the PPC’s because they couldn’t go without leads…but they also couldn’t afford to do SEO because they couldn’t run the campaigns congruently, and needed leads immediately.  The fact is that most businesses, small and large aren’t getting it right.  Optimize early on so you don’t wind up dependant on PPC, because if the cost was suddenly twice as much, ask yourself if you could still afford to buy your sales people the same number of leads.  Our search engine optimization experts can tailor a campaign that will help.
